My Starting Point

I am having surgery today. In a few hours I am going to the hospital and there will have bariatic surgery. For more than 20 years I have weighed more than 300 pounds. At my heaviest I was up to 368 pounds. Now this morning weigh 309. I have tried diets. I have even tried the LAP-Band almost a decade ago, and even that was unsuccessful. I still could not break into the 200s.

I have a couple of choices for the surgery. One is called a gastric sleeve (stomach stapling), where the stomach is narrowed so it is similar to a banana shape. This eliminates the pouch of the stomach and leads to having less room to hold food. You feel full more quickly. The other option, which I am choosing, is the gastric bypass, called a Roux-En-Y (RNY). It is more complicated, but it also has a higher weight loss success rate.

In the bariatric support groups on Facebook people share a bunch of letters and numbers. For me they are:

  • HW:368
  • CW:309
  • SW:309
  • GW:220

Meanings:  GW=Heaviest weight. CW=Current weight. SW=Surgery Weight. GW=Goal Weight.
